Using Hip Hop in Class

Sharing is caring!

Problem: I need to introduce my college students to a wider vary of poetry than simply the standard Shel Silverstein humorous stuff.

Solution: Branch out into songs as poetry, even hip hop as poetry!  One of my college students’ favourite poems to research all 12 months is “Rapper’s Delight” by Sugar Hill Gang.  The classroom scene goes one thing like this:

I hand out a packet of poetry to research for the week.  Students aren’t at all times excited to see packets as a result of it looks like numerous studying or work for them.  Some kids droop in their chairs.  Someone says, “Do we have to get through all of this today?”

“Alright, girls and boys, I’m going to begin by studying this primary poem to be able to simply get pleasure from it and see what it’s like.  This is known as ‘Rapper’s Delight.’  “

         I stated a hip, hop,
         The hippy to the hippy,
The hip hip hop, you don’t cease
The rock it to the bang bang boogie
         Say up jumped the boogie
To the rhythm of the boogie the beat.

(At this level I’ve everybody’s consideration, they suppose it have to be some sort of joke or mistake)

Skidlee bee-bop, we rock, a Scooby Do,
And guess what, America?  We love you!
Cause ya rock and ya roll with a lot soul
You may rock ’until you’re 100 a one years outdated!

(Now toes are tapping, heads are arising and down)

I don’t imply to brag, I don’t imply to boast,
But we like sizzling butter on our breakfast toast.
          Rock it up, child bubbah,
Baby bubbah to the boogie the bang bang the boogie,
To the beat, beat, it’s so distinctive,
Now come on all people and dance to the beat.

I end and all people claps.

I ask, “So what is that poem about?”…….lengthy pause, “Well, listen to it again and see if you can figure out what it’s about.”  I read the lyrics once more.  Eventually we conclude as a category that it’s just about nonsense but it surely’s numerous enjoyable!  This turns into an important alternative to speak about how sound and rhythm are such thrilling components of poetry.  Sometimes it’s about having fun with the aesthetics with no deeper which means.

Other instructing concepts for these lyrics could be:
-finding rhyming phrases or searching for particular phonics patterns
-noticing casual use of language which is a part of the brand new CCSS (’until as an alternative of till, ya as an alternative of you)
-the which means of vocabulary like “unique” and “boast”
-integrate with music by training tapping a gentle beat whereas reciting the phrases
-read repeatedly for fluency (even carry out for different lessons!)

This poem/rap may be discovered together with plenty of different nice hip hop lyrics and poems in this e-book:

It even comes with a CD of the authors/artists performing a number of of the poems (together with “Rapper’s Delight”) which is ideal in the event you’re undecided how the phrases or rhythm ought to sound.  If your principal questions you, you’ll be able to level out that it’s in an youngsters’s poetry anthology!  : )

Including “Rapper’s Delight” as a part of my research of poetry positively received my kids engaged, uncovered them to a greater diversity of poetry types, and drove residence how rhythm and the sound of language may be such highly effective instruments in poetry!

Do you realize what’s even higher than studying poetry?  Reading AND writing poetry.  Noticing traits of poetry like rhythm and rhyme lead straight into together with these components when writing poetry.  Here is a set of graphic organizers to assist kids plan out and write their very own poetry.  I even included copies of the demonstration planning, drafting, and enhancing that I did for every graphic organizer with my class.
